In the early years of School in Nursery and Reception it’s normal for children to start learning counting on fingers. However, for many children it becomes a habit and even in later years of KS2 many children keep counting on fingers which impacts their Mental Maths ability. As a consequence they find it difficult to do calculations in head which impacts their performance and overall confidence in Maths as a subject. It’s important for children to move to the habit of counting in head and work on Mental Maths in Year 1 and Year 2 and continue in later years.

Number bonds and Times Tables are two key foundation building blocks to develop mental months. They help children perform calculations in the head faster. As they get confident in number bonds and times tables, they automatically start doing calculations in the head rather than counting on Fingers.

How to Improve Mental Maths?

There are no shortcuts for moving from Counting on Fingers to Counting in Head. Every child takes his/her own time in developing the habit of counting in head. However what we as Parents can do is help them practice Number Bonds and Times tables as much as possible and let them develop confidence in their Mental Maths skills. What you will see is as they get confident in Mental and memorize the number facts, they will automatically move from Counting on Fingers to Counting in Head.
